Spotlight on challenges faced by children

CHENNAI: A meeting here on Tuesday to discuss the progress made by the State in the area of child rights had children highlighting the challenges they faced, including alcoholism and superstitious beliefs in their family, poor sanitation and inadequate school infrastructure.

Two children each from 30 districts participated in the meeting, organised by the Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW). Representatives from various organisations working with children, who would submit a report to the ICCW, heard them.

Trying their hand on dance- A drama on childeren's love for books

COIMBATORE: For the little members of this growing literary movement, it was a meeting not quite like their routine weekly ones. Their get-together on Sunday had a new dimension to it. They explored their talents in dance, music and drama, interacting with the members of similar groups from other villages. More than 30 children from five villages in and around Coimbatore got together.

All of them are part of a mobile library group started by a non-Governmental Organisation called ’Adaiyalam’, in the interest of serving hundreds of children living in the fringes of the city who had no access to proper schooling . The library is a collection of reading material which is constantly circulated among the members “It has been organised with a view to expanding their horizons on literary tastes and also give them an opportunity to explore their own artistic interests,” said S.Amsaveni, Co-ordinator of the movement. “It is the first time that the movement is organising a “Nataka Vizha” for the children,” she added.

Success of Padippum Inikkum Campaign

Tamil Reading Campaign implemented in 5 districts of Tamilnadu by AID-India and Government of Tamilnadu has started showing it result. Some of the milestones achieved during October 2006 – March 2007 are :
  • The number of 5th standard children who can read fluently has doubled - from 35% to 70%!
  • 5th standard children who can read at least sentences has increased from 58% to 85%!
  • The number of 5th standard children who could not even identify letters has dropped from 13.4% to 1.8% - coming down 7 times!
  • Taking 3rd, 4th and 5th std together, Children Reading Fluently has increased from 25% to 59%
  • 92% of the children have improved their reading skills by at least one level within 5 months.
  • Number of schools where more than 70% children can read tamil fluently  went up from 78 to 2107
