Report and request for funds for hut construction project
by AID India team visiting Pudhukkuppam & Pudhuppettai:
Jan 4, 2005
Dear Friends,
We (as part of AID India team) visited Pudhukkuppam & Pudhuppettai.
We stayed there for 5 days and worked on immediate relief measures.
All the works here are carried out by AID, DYFI & SFI volunteers. We
have put up a camp office at Panjankuppam (where the refugees from
affected areas of Pudhukkuppam are staying) and working in
Pudhukkuppam & Pudhuppettai.
As of now, food supply to the affected people is streamlined.
Cleaning and Sanitation work is going on. Medical support is given to
the affected people on need basis (daily). Most of the immunization
injections (TT, Typhoid, etc) are provided to the people. Distribution of
basic necessities like Soap, Tooth power, Mats, Blankets, Sarees, Dhoties
(New) is going on in Pudhuppettai. (Around 400 sets were
distributed yesterday).
The affected people can be divided in to two categories. One is
people who have lost all their things but their houses are safe.
Other is pople who have lost everything including house. While we are
distributing things to the first category, we are not in a position to
distribute to the second category as they don't have any space to store.
AID India plan of relief is as following.
(1) Immediate Relief - dead body and debris removal, food, clothing,
blankets, temporary shelter, medicines and health camps for
emergencies and epidemics
(2) Second Level Relief - Construction of huts and houses and health
needs
(3) Third Level Relief - Livelihood needs for the families affected -
forming cooperatives and providing livelihood support like boats, nets
etc.
In this, Phase I (Immediate Relief) work is going on and will be over
soon.
In the next phase, we have started working on arranging shelter for
people who have lost their houses. There are around 53 families in
pudhukkuppam and 77 families in pudhuppettai who have lost their
houses. Our government's plan is to construct two halls (One for
ladies and other for gents) in each village as an immediate measure.
They will arrange for independent houses within a time span of six
months.
But this is a quite sensitive thing. Already the people have lost a
lot and now if they are isolated, they may be feeling bad. So we have
planned to construct Huts for these families. The panchayat president
and Block Development Officer have agreed for this and we are in the
process of arranging for land. These huts will be a temporary measure
for a period of six months.
Construction of one hut costs around Rs. 2000. We are raising funds
for this project thru AID India.
Cheques should be made out to "AID-India", mention
"FOR CONSTRUCTION OF HUTS AT PUDHUKKUPPAM AND PUDHUPPETTAI"
