More funds disbursed, long term plans taking shape |
|
(Report by AID Tsunami Relief coordination team)
We talked to Dr. Ravishankar last night and learnt that the first phase
of the relief effort is completed. The $75,000 provided by us went
toward providing food etc, as detailed in this report.
In the second phase it is essential to help families by helping with
household items such as utensils, stoves, kerosene etc. Whereas the Govt
efforts are going quite well in the cities, the work in the villages is
still mainly carried out by NGOs such as AID-India and its partners.
This stage of relief will again require a similar quantum of funding,
$75,000, and a decision has been made to wire transfer the funds
immediately. Hence, by Jan 8, 2005, AID will have disbursed $150,000
for immediate relief needs.
The long term work is planned to span about 75 villages with about 100
to 200 familes each so that we are covering some 5000 families (about
20000 individuals). Dr. Balaji Sampath has just returned from a visit
to the Kanya Kumari district and we anticipate that our work will
expand into this area very soon in collaboration with groups such as
MALAR and NFF. Within the next few weeks, these efforts will transition
into helping to build temporary shelters. As always this requires
working closely with the the Govt to arrange for available land etc.
The funds involved in the next stage are estimated to be much larger
(several hundred thousand dollars being a rough estimate).
A survey is underway and a detailed appraisal for temporary shelters
along with a budget estimate will be received by Saturday, Jan 8, 2005
when a decision will be made on the funds being requested.
