Update from ANET: Andaman & Nicobar Islands E-mail
We are closely working with A & N Administration to level of the District Commissioner, the Chief Sectary, the Lieutenant Governor, the A & N Department of Environment and Forests, the Coast Guard, the Navy, the various Nicobar tribal Council, all chief, 1st, 2nd & 3rd Captains of the various groups of Nicobare people. Besides we have a powerful team in Delhi following up with the various committees set up for the islands and with several bureaucrats in charge of various issues regarding the islands.

The A & N Administration is supportive and are implementing what ever we, with the tribal Council, have been suggesting. We have been sending boats on navy ships, locally made in Andamans and these are 8- 10 m long dugout canoes with new inboard engines & a set of boat tools, to various groups and islands in the central & southern group of Nicobars. Since these groups  use un conventional tools and require these urgently, we have been getting these fabricated in Port Blair and sending them through the coast guard or the navy ships and planes to the Nicobars.

Ladies & girls needs; mainly tops (Blouses) and sorangs which Nicobare ladies wear were also distributed. Bicycles were distributed to Nicobare volunteers who are assisting in relief and rehab programme; fishing gear including snorkels and masks for Nicobaries to become self sufficient. We have also  looked after education, mainly purchase of text books, tuition, library and hostel fees for Nicobare students studying at the Port Blair College. At present this being taken care of by the A & N Admin. so we are out of this, at least the Admin opened its eyes because of ANET.

Currently two researchers are working with the Nicobare people and researching to find out what kind of permanent housing these people want, and materials to design. once the research work is complete by this (June) month end we will hold 4-5 meetings with tribal council and the Nicobare people to finalize what kind of permanent housing they require. This will then be discussed with GOI in Delhi.
