Page 12 of 37 Immediate Relief Activities by Others Supported by AID The above were the immediate relief activities organized by AID in which AID-India volunteers were directly involved. We either worked directly in these villages or along with other organizations – but either way our volunteers were involved in the field implementation. But apart from this direct work, AID-India also organized support (material and financial) for other groups working on the field. AID-US also raised funds and supported a number of groups for Tsunami immediate relief work (and is continuing to support many of their long term rehabilitation work as well). We collected and gave relief materials to Sneha in Nagai, MALAR in Kanyakumari, several organizations and fishermen’s unions in Chennai and Tiruvallur district. We collected and sent relief materials to Andaman and Nicobar through Crocodile Bank. Breakthrough Science Society - a group we have been working with for a very long time in West Bengal - wanted to work on the relief efforts in Tamilnadu and Andaman & Nicobar. AID immediately supported their efforts with funds. Together with the Medical Service Centre (MSC), BSS sent a team of 35 doctors, 60 health workers and 100 volunteers and set up medical relief camps in Cuddalore, Nagapatinam and Pondicherry in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Andaman & Nicobar Islands soon after the Tsunami. Putting all the camps together they served about 15000 people. AID-US had also supported the Andaman Nicobar Ecology Trust (ANET) in buying urgently needed relief materials and in organizing the relief efforts in the Andamans. ANET was active in collecting and distributing relief materials in the islands. AID-US also supported Chaitanya Jyothi Welfare Society (CJWS) in providing short-term relief (Onions, Dry Chillies, Pulses, Tamarind, Oil, Biscuits, Rice, Baby towels, monkey caps, Sarees, and Blankets) to 784 families in the aforementioned 7 villages in Nellore district in Andhra Pradesh. Two AID fulltimers, Ravi and Aravinda, visited them and worked out a long term rehabilitation program with them which is now being coordinated along with AID-India. Apart from this AID has also been supporting several groups for the medium and long term rehabilitation work – which we will see in the next section. But before that we will now look at AID-India’s direct work in the Medium Term Activities.
