Page 15 of 37 Livelihoods – Nets, Boats and Engines Most people think of this as long term. Indeed the impact is long term – it helps people get back to work. But the work involved in providing people with boats or nets is very short term – it is only a few days of work – identifying the people who need the help and placing an order with the boat/net manufacturers! That’s why we have classified it under medium term rehabilitation. Nets: We provided nets to all the families in 14 villages – Thazhudalikuppom, Pudunadukuppom, Peruntharavu, Aalikuppom, Payanadukuppom, Panaiyurchinnakuppom, Semmenjeri, Uyyalikuppom, Pattipulam, Venpurusham, Kokilimedu, Devaneri, Puduedaiyur and in Killai. In most places, we not only provided the nets, but also all the accessories for the nets. All together we spent about Rs. 40 Lakhs on providing the fishing nets. There are a large number of different nets that the fishermen use. They are also very finicky about the size of the holes in the nets, etc. To ensure that we don’t supply the wrong nets, before placing orders we always discussed with the fishermen and went with them to place the order at the net manufacturing center. Once again a number of people helped us with funds for providing the nets – many came to our office with funds specifically for providing nets and asked us to identify the village and help provide the nets. Once we surveyed and identified the villagers who needed the nets, they went with us and the villagers to place the orders for the nets. Sripad - one of our volunteers from IITM – did a great job identifying the people who needed the nets, placing orders, and organizing the net distribution functions in most of the villages. Engine and Boat Repairs: We totally repaired about 150 boat engines. We set up a engine repair center at Perumalpettai (set up by Peter from AID-Orissa) where the local youth were trained to repair engines and they repaired a lot of engines. In Paramankeni kuppom, with help from Tirumalai Charities, we repaired 19 boats.
