Page 29 of 37 These 4 programs – support centers, tuition centers, library and learning centers – forms an integrated village level intervention in education. They will work towards mobilizing community involvement and action in education. Again we have already started work in these programs: -
We did a reading and math level survey in 20 villages in Nagai, 30 villages in Tirunelvelli, 36 villages in Koovathur and 14 villages in Kelambakkam (and 12 villages in Sulagiri – which is not a Tsunami affected area) – about 50 children in each village. The survey was done by a large number of volunteers and covered 3rd to 7th standard students. It showed that 53% children were not able to read a simple paragraph and 10% students were not even able to identify numbers. Only 15% children were able to do division. Clearly demonstrating the need for remedial programs and serious help in and outside the classroom for many of the children. -
In several villages in Koovathur and Kelambakkam we have started support centers directly with the local volunteers and fulltimers from the Tsunami villages. -
We have also been working with other NGOs to start support centers in Nagai, Tirunelvelli and Palaverkadu. 30 centers have been started in Nagai-Tiruvarur area and another 38 in Tirunelvelli. Training for starting the centers has been given in Palaverkadu. Each center has about 20 children. We have been conducting monthly training for the NGOs and also supplied them with reading materials, blackboards, etc. -
We organized 20 metric melas in villages around Koovathur and Kelambakkam. These are fun educational activities for the children where they set up stalls and set measurement and estimation based problems for their parents to solve. -
In Chennai, we surveyed and identified 72 tuition centers running in the slums – several in Tsunami areas. We also organized a training program for these tuition centers where teachers from 30 centers participated. (Though this is not a direct Tsunami related program, it will also impact some of the Tsunami areas – that’s why it is mentioned here).
