Page 34 of 37 Technology Interventions Computer education centers and village knowledge centers: We have been running computer centers in other areas successfully. We are planning to start several computer centers in the Kovathur area. Every month the students will be supplied with the course materials and provided sufficient computer time to learn all the required skills. They will be tested at the end of the month before they proceed to the next topic. These centers will be linked to the village learning centers in each village. In time we plan to add computers to all the learning centers (which will already have people coming in for the tuition classes, videos, library, etc). We are looking for used computer donations for this program. Adapting and adopting new technology designs: We are trying to adapt a design for one-wheel push trolley that can be used to transport fish more easily. We are also working on a design for a household solar based drinking water utility that can convert salt water into good drinking water. We are also working on designs for foldable bi-cycles. Mobilization, Sports and Youth This is one of the most critical areas that is needed for all the other programs – without community support none of the other programs can succeed. We have already been doing a lot of local mobilization work and have a large team of volunteers in each of the Tsunami villages who are now being formed into village branches that will coordinate all our village level programs. A village volunteers camp at Mahabalipuram attended by more than 100 volunteers We will continue this mobilization and sensitization work. We will periodically organize training and motivation camps for the volunteers and build a larger perspective understanding on issues. We have formed sports groups in each village and have provided sports materials to them. We will build on this further adding special training programs (specifically for women) and inter-village tournaments. In several villages volunteers have formed Street Theatre troupes. We plan to organize regular trainings and support for these groups and help them build up a progressive cultural movement in these villages.
