Balaji Sampath selected as Ashoka fellow E-mail
We are very happy to inform you that AID Jeevan Saathi and Tsunami Relief and Rehabiliation Campaign leader Dr. Balaji Sampath has been elected as an Ashoka Fellow.

The election process comprises three rounds of interviews. The Ashoka fellowship is a prestigious fellowship given to social entrepreneurs across the world. Past Ashoka fellows include people like P.Sainath, Anil Agarwal, Madhav Chavan etc. For more information, please refer to the below links.

Educational Qualification

  •  1994-1997: Ph.D in Electronics and Communications Engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park
  •  1990-1994: B.Tech in Electronics and Communications Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Madras

 

Work Experience

  •  2001-Current: Secretary for AID-India. Coordinating state wide projects in Health, Primary Education, Science Education, Village Enterprises, Rural Technology and Tsunami Rehabilitation.

 

  •  1999-2001: Expanding and coordinating the Arogya Iyakkam health programme, conceptualizing and initiating the hundred block plan and part of the national team coordinating the People's Health Assembly campaign. Part of several Government and UNICEF State Level committees on nutrition, health and Education.

 

  •  1997-1999: Staying in villages and learning about community health and education programmes. Learning about rural development and rural technology needs by working with the Tamilnadu Science Forum and the Center for Ecology and Rural Development.  Worked for brief periods on a number of small projects. Visited a large number of NGOs to learn about their work.

 

  •  1994-1997: As a PhD student at the University of Maryland, volunteered with Association for India's Development - a voluntary group of Indian students and professionals which raised funds to support NGO projects in Indian villages. Worked on all aspects - fund-raising, mobilizing volunteers, project review, direction planning, setting up systems, creating awareness materials and a website and strengthening the organization. Helped expand AID from 1 chapter in Maryland to about 25 chapters all over the US and UK and established AID as a large volunteer network.

  •  Awarded the Ashoka Fellowship for Innovative Work in Science Education
  • Graduate Fellowship from the University of Maryland
  • Institute Merit Fellowship at IIT-Madras
  • All India 4th in IIT-JEE 1990
  • All India 1st in Physics Talent Exam
