Dear AID Volunteers and Friends,
Happy New Year.
This year has seen a lot of activity and growth in AID-TN. We are now working directly in almost 200 villages in 4 blocks - on integrated village development. We are also working with another 30 NGOs on a wide range of programs. We have started this year 1300 village libraries! We are also providing a lot of training to government schools, balwadis and other institutions and developing resource materials to improve their work.
We now have a fulltime team of about 100 people - working on about 20 programs! These fulltimers are working as part of 10 teams -
(1) Primary Education
(2) Secondary Education
(3) Children and Women's Health
(4) Village Libraries
(5) Livelihood and Agriculture
(6) Folk Mart
(7) Equitec Rural Technology
(8) Immediate Relief and Rehabilitation
(9) Construction and Infrastructure
(10) Accts and Admin
Of course each block - Vembakkam, Koovathur, Chennai, Sulagiri - also has its separate block team.
For almost one year we have been organizing monthly review meetings (every month!) for our fulltime program teams. In these review meetings they present their work and the problems they encounter. These meetings have been very useful in helping us plan and implement various programs systematically. These monthly meetings have been exclusively for the fulltime team.
Now, at the beginning of a new year, we would like to hold an Annual Review Meeting - to present our work to a larger group. Each of the program teams will present their one year report. Dr. V. Vasanthi Devi (President of AID-INDIA) and Prof. Mohan Bhagat and Shrinaath Chidambaram, two key volunteers from AID-US (and its Directors), will be attending this review meeting as special guests.
We would like you - Volunteers, Supporters and Guides - to attend the review meeting, listen to the reports by the various teams, participate in the discussions, guide the overall direction of the various programs and offer your suggestions on how we can improve the quality of our work.
Above all - your presence will encourage our fulltimers and motivate them to take on new challenges in the coming year.
Several of our fulltimers have done exceptional work during the year. They have taken special initiative and done amazing things. In this annual review meeting, we would like to honor these fulltimers as well.
We have also just published 2 very special books in Tamil: John Holt's "How Children Fail" and Hesperian's "Where Women have No Doctor". We have been working on translating these books for the last several years. Thanks to the perseverence of Chandra and Prabha - we finally have managed to publish these two very important books. Along with the awards function, we will also have a book release function for these two books.
