(Information recieved from Shri Chenniah of APVVU, by Neerja, AID-BayArea volunteer)
- APVVU volunteers including Ajay have been touring the coastal areas.
- Vizag coast isn't very badly affected - there's been no loss of life, all the missing fishermen have returned.
- Machilipatnam (Krishna dist) has been the wost affected. West
Godavari has also been badly affected, but APVVU doesn't have a big
presence there.
- 40-50 APVVU volunteers have gone to each of the affected
districts to help with relief works, in order to take up prepare for
concerted efforts at long term relief and rehabilitation
- Amongst the badly affected areas, APVVU has a good presence in
coastal areas of Nellore dist - there's been substantial loss of boats,
nets, housing.
- APVVU volunteers have spread out to remote areas of the district and are collecting details
- By Tue eve they will have a better idea about what needs to be done.
- APVVU would like to undertake some relief efforts especially in Nellore district.
- Mr. Chennaih will send us details as soon as they are available.
- In general damage in AP is far less than that in TN.
- The govt has been fairly quick to respond to the situation
- APVVU is focussing on making sure relief efforts reach the people, and corruption etc can be checked
- Mr. Chennaih can be reached on cell at 94402-74143.
- Mr. Ajay could not be reached as he is still touring the affected regions and his cell doesn't work there.
- If there are ngos that we are working with in Krishna and Prakasam dist, we should try and contact them
