Mail from near Nagapattinam, India E-mail

Hello Guys!

It has been a while since I have communicated, I have been busy with so many things,
things that I never thought about!

Any who, here I am very close to the site of the disaster, my home town is about
40 minutes drive from Nagapattinam and Veilankanni, the worst affected places
in this disaster. I am getting first hand information from volunteers and it is not
very good. We have several camps here in my town for the homeless people
and lots of people are involved in helping them like organising food and
clothings etc.

We collected some clothings and provisions and distributed and what I saw is
heart breaking, what ever clothes we had disappeared in seconds and
hundreds more to go!! but I think later people managed to bring in more.
At this point all are getting fed and sheltered, what I hear from people is that
there are bodies strewn every where and not enough people to clean up, lots
of this burial and clean up work is done by the relatives and volunteers only
inspite of their sufferings and losses. The efforts of the local fishermen inspite
of their losses and sufferings saved many lives and they are still going on with
the clean up work.

Mass graves are being dug up and bodies are buried in groups and it is a heart
breaking thing to watch even on TV, coming to the point, what I failed to see
in the news channels and any TV or through the people involved in the relief
work is, not enough trained people(army, coast gaurd) involved in this relief, why
has not our government activated the troops to help and clean up the mess
immediately, it is very important to clean up things quick because of the
risk of deadly epidemics due to the decaying bodies and dead animals.

Also there were a couple of Islands that were inhabited by around three
thousand families near Cuddalore and Chidambaram that have not been
checked by the rescue people, the people on TV were saying that they were
waiting for a helicopter and they were saying it for the entire day and I still
dont know if they checked it, what does it take to fly a helicopter from
Chennai to Cuddalore or Chidambaram? Where as I see all those VIPs
touring around in helicopter and giving interviews on TV, would n't it be
wise to utilize those means and efforts that are spent on  Z plus security
and tour on some rescue efforts and save some lives?

Dear Friends, what I see here is people are helping themselves and though
the government is involved it is not what and how it should be. Please do
make some calls and pull some strings to activate the clean up process.

With lots of pain and sorrow
Senthil Ganesh
