Association for India's Development, Inc. (AID), a US-based voluntary
non-profit development organization with over 40 chapters across the
US, has already committed $75,000 from its relief and rehabilitation
fund towards immediate relief efforts in India.  AID greatly
appreciates the contributions of over $600,000 so far and appeals for
continued support and donations for relief work.

Significantly more funds are needed to ensure speedy relief and long
term rehabilitation for the disaster-affected people and AID stresses
the need for communities and individuals to continue to give and
donate. The enormous damage caused by the disaster will require
significant resources to restore normalcy in the lives of the
affected. Dr. Balaji Sampath, a full-time coordinator of AID-India,
based in Chennai emphasized the need for widespread support and said,
"There has been a great response from our volunteers and many people
are contacting us with offers to help. We will need all the help we
can get as the damage is devastating."

AID volunteers in Southern India, in partnership with several other
local groups, have been working tirelessly to disperse relief
materials including clothes, blankets, food, medicines in Chennai,
Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Pondicherry and Kanyakumari, some of the
worst affected areas. "We are planning relief and rehabilitation work
in three levels, Immediate Relief - food, clothing, blankets,
temporary shelter, medicines and health camps for emergencies and
epidemics, Second Level Relief ??" shelter and health needs and Third
Level Relief - Livelihood needs for the families affected - forming
cooperatives and providing livelihood support like boats, nets for the
affected communities. Presently, we are focusing on the first phase"
said  Balaji.

The AID chapters in Bangalore and other cities across India are
collecting relief materials from their local communities and shipping
them to the affected parts as part the first phase. Immediate relief
work is underway in 7 clusters of 30 villages each in South Tamil Nadu
and around Chennai. AID is also in touch with one of the few
Non-Governmental Organizations based in Andaman and Nicobar Islands
and will begin dispersing aid to these areas as well. AID volunteers
in other countries like Australia are also actively raising funds from
their local communities.

AID is not able accept material donations in the US due to logistical
constraints, but accepting material donations in India. There is a
great need for medical supplies, doctors and volunteers on the field.

As the extent of the damage due to the tsunamis continues to unravel,
our hearts and minds go out to all those who have been affected by the
disaster. AID urges the communities in the United States to contribute
liberally to all charities that are working in the affected parts of
South and South East Asia. AID thanks everyone who has contributed for
their generosity and appeals to its volunteers, donors, and the larger
community to continue to support this effort. AID also thanks
